I think there needs to be a transition stage. I began with only letting him have the soother at home and only at sleep times (so afternoon nap and bedtime). The soother was not allowed to come out of the house (unless we went on a long car drive). I think I kept that up for a few weeks. Maybe it was even longer I can't remember. Then I began prepping him and letting him know that he would not get them at nap time but he could have them at bed time. After about a week of prepping him for this that is just what we did. He couldn't have it at nap but he could have it at bedtime when it was dark. We did that for awhile and then we began prepping him and talking to him about how we didn't need the soother anymore. That he was a big boy etc. and that he didn't need it. Obviously there was some crying but I just kept telling him that it was going to happen. I remember saying to him, "5 more sleeps with your soother and then after that there will be no more soother." And then the next day, "4 more sleeps with your soother and then after that there will be no more soother." Then when the last night came with the soother I reminded him that this was his last night with one. The next morning I took the soothers and cut the tops of them. They no longer had a suction to them so they didn't work. He was MAD! But I reminded him that he was a big boy and that he didn't need them anymore. I told him they were broken and didn't work anyways. Time to throw them away. He did it himself. He was sad for awhile but honestly it wasn't so bad for both him and me because it was gradual and because he knew what to expect. Good luck!Anna Schoenwaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13103018417674860818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4775750687688353135.post-39314780664084596932010-06-03T11:00:04.270-07:002010-06-03T11:00:04.270-07:00She is so cute! She saw me pack them up in a box and I just kept telling her they were gone. It tooks a day or two of sadness but it works like a charm! I found though I had to really just be ready myself to put up with crankiness for a day and it worked out great.Sherihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14210758499740534849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4775750687688353135.post-4493445369612068862010-05-31T15:00:07.029-07:002010-05-31T15:00:07.029-07:00Best way to get rid of soothers is cold turkey.
